The Sloop & Longboat

Some historic drawings of a traditional 17th century Dutch 'Boot' (Boat) and smaller 'Sloep' or 'Chaloup' (Sloop), similar vessels could have been used for the Batavia as well. The boat is about 36 ft. (12 m.) in length. The sloep is 27 ft. (9 m.) over all.The original images are archived by the Historic Maritime Society of Amsterdam.I built this page specially for some friendly folks in Geraldton - West Australia, who reconstructed a longboat of the Batavia based on these drawings, they intend to Sail her to the Island of Java! Retracing Commander Francois Pelsaert's fabulous journey in 1629.
